Meaning and Structure in Art: A Romanian–Australian Dialogue at Elizabeth Farm

Meaning and Structure in Art: A Romanian–Australian Dialogue at Elizabeth Farm
Presented as part of Parramatta’s Lit! in partnership with The Sydney Fringe 2025

On Saturday, 6th September at 12pm, the historic Elizabeth Farm will come alive with voices that span continents and disciplines, as the panel discussion “Meaning and Structure in Art” invites audiences into a rich, cross-cultural exploration of creativity, form, and identity.

This event is proudly part of Parramatta’s Lit!, a bold literary initiative co-curated by over 20 organisations and presented in partnership with The Sydney Fringe 2025. With 33+ events, 200+ literary contributors, and 12 venues activated across 29 days, Parramatta’s Lit! is a festival of stories, self-determination, and artistic freedom.

The Panel: A Variety of Perspectives
Moderated by the insightful Mihaela Cristescu, the panel brings together a dynamic group of thinkers, writers, and cultural leaders:

  • Augusta Supple, Festival Director of Parramatta’s Lit!, whose radical vision champions artistic autonomy and the “what if” of creative instinct.
  • Anișoara Laura Mustețiu, novelist, poet, and literary journalist, whose work bridges heritage and healing through emotionally resonant literature.
  • Dr. Luke Carman, acclaimed Western Sydney author and academic, known for his raw, lyrical portrayals of suburban life and literary subversion.
  • Luminita Lenuta, artist whose insight bring depth to questions of structure and symbolism.
  • Tazin Abdullah, multidisciplinary artist and advocate, exploring identity, and the politics of representation through visual and literary forms.
  • Felicity Amos, Soprano and President of HMDS
  • Dr. Bogdan Meunier, Publisher, philosopher and cultural theorist.
  • Catalin Anastase, Romanian-Australian performer and actor, whose theatrical sensibility adds rhythm and embodiment to the dialogue.

Together, these voices will explore how structure can both liberate and constrain meaning, how cultural heritage shapes artistic choices, and how instinct, fear, and desire fuel the creative impulse.

A Message from Augusta Supple

“This literary festival is not about artistic control… I’m fascinated by the ‘what if’ of the maker—that feeling of compulsion, instinct, fear and desire which encourages someone to throw an offering into the great cauldron of culture… I’m dedicated to the idea of the artist as leader, and the core unshakeable principle of self-determination.”
